You need to do some research and some learning BEFORE getting a puppy. There is a LOT more to know than how to get one.
DON’T BUY AT THE MALL!! The puppies come from puppy mills and almost always are sick puppies. $2500 not uncommon to spend on a dog but if your gonna spend that much, find a reputable breeder. Go to and do some research there. They have breeder classifieds. Just make sure that the pups parents have all required health screenings for the beed and make sure you meet mum and like her before you buy the pup. Good Luck!
DONT BY FROM STORE, because the pups come from puppy mills, and will die as soon as they get to your home.
search online for a good qualified breeder.
Note: Do not visit one dog breeder, visit many to compare!
Go to your local animal shelter, city pound, humane society shelter—-they will have plenty of choice, of dogs that need homes, and it will be reasonably priced.
If you get a dog from them, you are helping the pet overpopulation problem, and also helping support the animal shelter.
Check out your local shelters. They get little ones sometimes and it’s cheaper than a breeder. They also have a lot of training info and advice for new puppy owners.
Please go to your local shelter! Good dogs need homes. Your shelter needs the help finding them. Check out petfinder.org ! Good luck with your puppy!
Do not buy from a pet store. Pet store puppies are from puppy mills, and you don’t want to pay people who abuse dogs like that.
Do not buy online. You need to meet the puppy before you buy it – it’s not like buying a pair of shoes.
Consider visiting the Petfinder website and adopting from a rescue group near you. There are lots and lots of dogs out there that need homes. Why not adopt a dog and save a life?
Please dont get a dog froma store or a breeder, there are thousands of dogs in animal shelters. All of our pets are from the shelter or off the street (6 cats, 1 dog, 3 rats) You will feel wonderful knowing that you are giving a poor homeless animal a home.
ok i do NOT suggest buying from the mall. I bought my golden retriever from a newspaper add. she was pure bred and we thought about entering her into dog shows becuase her coat is really nice. we bought her for $300 so there is an example of a quality dog for a good price. i suggest looking in adds in the paper. you may be suprised to see what you find. if you are ok with spending a high price you could search for a breader on the internet. those dogs will probably be garunteed to be good looking dogs. but if you just want a good house pet, go with the newspapers.
(certain dogs will cost different amounst of money, for example boxers bulldogs and rottweilers from a breeder are VERY expensive)
Please, please do NOT buy a puppy from a pet store at the mall. Many of these stores buy their puppies from puppy mills where dogs are mistreated very badly. Buy from a reputable breeder in your area or in an area close by. Do some research on the internet to find one. Also, be careful to pick a breed that fits your lifestyle. Getting a dog is a long-time committment. Good luck.
You might want to check out the local Humane Society. The have a large collection of animals that were abandoned, or whatever.
It’s not how much you pay for a pet… it’s how much you love them. If you don’t see one that you make a connection with, go home and come back on another day. Sooner or later you will find the right one. You will be doing the animal a great favor by giving it a loving home and I guarantee that you will get that back two-fold in love.
Usually the charges you have to pay will equal the shots, spay or neutering charges and a small clinical fee, if any.
Best of luck… and remember… pet ownership is a big responsibility. That little creature is totally reliant on you for almost everything…. but they really are worth it. Unconditional love is truly a sight to behold….
Hope this helps…
ANY dog sold in a petstore is overpriced and from a puppymill. even if the dogs are registered (meaningless), they are registered to a junk registry which doesn’t even HOLD shows so be aware that their registration means ZERO.
That said, you need to find a reputable breeder. You want to find one that either shows in conformation or competes in agility etc. Be SURE the dog has has health testing.
GOOD breeders are not that easy to find, so do your homework. First stop might be a local dog show.
You need to thoroughly research the pedigree, etc.
Please do NOT buy a petstore dog. it just increases the suffering found in puppymills.
Do not buy dogs online or through the internet. It is not safe. There are a lot of scams and liars online that will take your money and not send you a puppy.
What you should do is go to the library and get some books on the different breeds you are interested in. Read those books and then do some research online about the breed you are interested in.
Find the national breed club’s website and contact them about a breeder referral.
Make sure the breeder takes good care of their dogs and doesn’t have more then 1 breed of dog. They shouldn’t have multiple breeds of dogs.
Make sure that they are breeding to better the breed and doing test on the thyroid, patellas, heart.
Ask why the breeder is breeding their dogs and if they say they are in it because they need money then do not buy from them. They do not care about the dogs, they care about making money.
Also visit some dog shows and speak with the people about a puppy.
Pet stores are not a good place to buy puppies. Also the newspaper is not a good place to buy puppies either.
The link below will show you where conformation shows are in your area, put in the breed and the state you are in and you can find the date of the show and where it is.
You should do some research on puppies. Find a breed that fits within your home. Getting a puppy is just like having a baby.
I got my pup from
You should make it a family affair, have your parents and sister help you decide on the right one for you.
I do NOT reccommend buying a dog online. How can you decide that it is the dog for you from just a couple pictures? If you are serious about buying a dog then find a local breeder. It is important that you view the parents to see their demeanor and body types and also to spend time with the puppies and decide which personality type you like best. Do not buy a puppy online, it is likely that you will be scammed.
first of all you need to be sure the of the responsibilities a dog can bring. i suggest to look in newspapers or websites and to buy your dog from a breeder. make sure the parents have their pedigrees and DO NOT BUY THEM FROM A MALL. if your results are 0, try asking to a veterinary for some good breeders in your area, like i did.
Buying a dog can be tricky if you want to stay away from puppy mills but there are some stores that publicly post that their puppies are not from puppy mills and they probably are not lying but your other option online I would not recommend because you could be scammed much easier if you never see the puppy in person and never meet the person selling he/she plus it’s a lot easier to lie about puppy mills online But there are some honest sites hopefully good luck!!!!!
