For wholesale sources, you can either go the free or the fee-based route.

For a fee, you can signup with a wholesale directory service. There are some quality ones, but you have to be careful of the low-quality ones out there. Best bet is to use one recommended by someone you know or, if that’s not an option, make sure to only use one with a money back guarantee. A good directory can save you a lot of time searching online!

For free, you can do your own searches online. Most people will search using “wholesale” (or a variation thereof) in their search phrase. This will often get you a bunch of junk results. Instead of using “wholesale,” try using “distributor” or “manufacturer” plus the type of items you are looking for. So, for bags, you might search for “bag distributor.” Be more specific if you can.

Another option is to find things that you like, and see who manufactures them. Then you can contact the manufacturer directly and ask them about wholesale sales.

Of course, another option is to find generic wholesale products and customize them yourself. You might purchase white bags and dye them in pretty colors, for example. You could rubber stamp them; just make sure to use stamps from “angel companies” so you won’t have any issues there. Or, if you have an inkjet printer, you could get transfer paper; create and print out your designs and then iron them onto the bags, or whatever other products you decide to sell.

The customization option is really the only way to have items that are truly different from what everyone else is selling, because, no matter the wholesaler you purchase from, it’s not likely they are going to be selling exclusively through you (unless perhaps they are a small startup or something), so others would be able to buy from them as well. But, if you can create custom goods and have your own brand and style, then you can create products that are only available through you!

I would try the ultimate wholesale bible. It tells you the fast easy way to start your retail business with little to no cost and allows you to buy from true wholesale companies. Also, besides that great information it also list 800+ true wholesale companies in a ton of different product lines. It is definitely where you should start.

You can try a sample of the book for free with no commitment, purchase, signup etc required.
